From the canal locks to the viaduct, Hanwell's Victorian terraces mean plenty of cars parked on the street and short, stop-start trips, which is hard on an engine over time.
Cars that live on terraced streets often do a lot of short journeys, and that pattern shows up in the engine bay. Cold starts, patchy oil circulation and little chance to burn off condensation can all lead to rough running, sensor faults and tired cooling systems.
MTS Garage Services is an independent family-run garage in Hayes, and we look after drivers from Hanwell, Southall, Greenford, Osterley and Hounslow. Bring us a car or van of any make and we will find out what is wrong, tell you in plain terms, and quote clearly before we pick up a spanner.
Take a car that idles roughly after the school run, or a van that loses power on a hill. The temptation is to clear the light and carry on, but that only hides the message. We connect diagnostic equipment, read what the engine management system has recorded, then check the likely causes in order: plugs, coils, air and fuel supply, sensors and wiring. Engine misfire repairs and overheating faults are handled the same way. Oil use is worth raising too, since a car that needs topping up regularly is telling you something about seals, rings or the crankcase breather.
A car sitting in traffic along the main road in summer puts the cooling system under real strain. A weak radiator cap, a sticking thermostat, a leaking hose or a worn water pump can each let temperatures climb, and repeated overheating is the usual route to a blown head gasket. Water pump replacement often goes alongside a timing belt change, and timing chain replacement is needed when a chain stretches or rattles on a cold start. If you see coolant puddles, a sweet smell or a gauge creeping upwards, get it checked early.
Modern engines depend on sensors, and a faulty one can mimic a serious mechanical failure. We check these first. With turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, symptoms such as a whine, oil smoke or sluggish acceleration need careful testing because oil starvation is often the real culprit, and fitting a new turbo to an unresolved cause just repeats the failure. If the damage is deep, we will explain whether a cylinder head repair, a full engine rebuild or a replacement engine makes more sense for your car, and why.
Hanwell sits along its main road through west London, with the Grand Union Canal locks and the railway viaduct as its most familiar landmarks. Many homes there are older terraces without off-street parking, so we are happy to arrange a convenient time to drop off your car at our garage at Chesterfield Way, Hayes. We also welcome drivers from Southall, Greenford, Osterley and Hounslow. If you are not sure whether your car is safe to drive in, call us and describe the symptoms.
We also help drivers with engine repairs from nearby Southall, Greenford, Osterley, Hounslow, and the garage in Hayes is the base for all of it.

Common causes include worn spark plugs, a weak coil, a sticking sensor or a dirty injector, and on some engines a stretched timing chain. A scan and a few tests narrow it down quickly, so it is worth having it looked at.
Not always. Thin vapour on a cold morning is normal condensation. Thick white smoke that lingers, along with falling coolant, is more concerning and should be tested promptly. We can pressure-test the system to be sure.
Yes. We work on cars and vans of all makes and models, including turbocharged diesels. If you rely on the van for work, tell us when you need it back and we will say what is realistic once we have diagnosed it.
